Woman's Van Gets Mistaken for a Food Truck—and Oof
It’s pretty safe to say that when we make travel plans, we’re making them to get away from our everyday responsibilities of work, cleaning house, and maybe a few choice people (we’re not naming any names…).
But TikToker @stumblinguponserendipity almost found herself starting up a whole new work venture when a man approached her van, thinking it was something else entirely.
The TikToker was in the middle of freshening up her space with all of the doors and windows thrown open while she reset towels, blankets, and dreamy-thick comforters. She’d actually been recording the cleaning session to use as material for an upcoming clean-with-me style video.
Instead, she captured herself standing up from her work to address a man who had approached one of her windows. His words were muffled at first, so she asked him to repeat himself.
He asked again:
“Is that a food truck?”
The TikToker stood there, wringing her hands, clearly stunned.
“No, it’s a van…”
There was an awkward silence, and the man attempted to recover.
“Oh! I live next door.”
But the TikToker wasn’t having it, simply saying, “Okay…” before giving way to silence.

Despite being less than 15 seconds long, viewers had a lot of opinions about the short exchange.
Some imagined how confused the man must have been, thinking for a moment that it was a “food van.”

Others agreed, hoping that the guy eventually got the food he wanted.

Because most felt that it was a genuine misunderstanding and that the guy tried to be nice and resolve the discomfort.

Others felt second-hand embarrassment over that final “okay.”

Though the van likely didn’t have any signage on it to suggest that it was a food truck, seeing it parked in the street with a person moving around inside of it may have given the guy just enough “evidence” to think it was a food truck. We’re all human, and we’ve all had one of those “that doesn’t make sense at all” moments before.
But it’s important to remember, too, that the moment was equally perplexing for the TikToker, who didn’t anticipate someone approaching her home, inquiring about food. Maybe other responses would have been more appropriate or kind, but in the confusion of the moment, they both did the best they could.
What’s the weirdest misunderstanding you’ve had with someone that would compare to confusing a van with a food truck? Bonus points if it happened while traveling!
