Social media culture has become incredibly loud, and it can be hard to ignore its influence. We’re pushed on a daily basis to buy the new thing, upgrade that item, go on that trip, take part in that experience, and never, ever fall behind on the latest trends!

But mom and TikToker @breandbrice is here to remind us that life doesn’t have to be about all that. Life can be slower, softer, and centered around home, and maybe it’s better that way.

Eager to escape the influence and to focus on her marriage, her life, and her future child, TikToker @breandbrice and her husband purchased an older trailer that they agreed to transform into their home over time, rather than rushing to do it all overnight. But most importantly, she wanted to make it a home, not a statement piece.

Here are a few of the key features of what she calls “normalizing your life”:

“Our trailer is 24 years old with only 256 square feet.”

Their home is older and smaller than average, but this is arguably a more affordable option for a family just starting out on the road or eager to prioritize the most important things in life, rather than the flashy, popular ones.

“[We] have spent countless hours fixing and renovating.”

Especially with an older trailer, repairs and upkeep projects will need to take place, but when you take it at a slow pace, it’s much more manageable physically and financially, and you can use it as an opportunity to really make the space your own.

“90% of what we own is second-hand and thrifted.”

This is a great way to upgrade a space while saving money. If you’re patient with trifting and consignment shops, you can easily find great pieces that are either high-quality, antique, or both that will bring warmth, sophistication, and originality to your space. Plus, if you need a certain style of piece, there are many dupes available at more affordable prices.

“We are becoming first-time parents in this trailer.”

It’s common for travelers to assume that they are traveling during a certain era of their life, like traveling through their twenties, or that once they start traveling, their lives will never change, but people can also go through many different eras of life while staying on the road. Creating a space that can be updated and transformed, even in small ways, to accommodate babies, pets, and even new jobs or hobbies, can make all the difference to being able to stay on the road in the long-term.

“We might not be able to afford that influential lifestyle, but that’s okay because this is our home.”

This family truly decided to focus on what matters the most to them, specifically their family, making memories together, and being able to travel as a trio, and the rest is up for negotiation. Once you decide what you absolutely must have, it’s much easier to look at the rest as a possibility, rather than something you must have or that you have missed out on.

TikToker @breandbrice expands on this idea in another video, simply featuring her husband reading to their newborn baby. The text on the video simply says, “My Kind of Rich,” and the video is fittingly set to the lyrics, “They say love is more precious than gold” from the song “Millionaire” by Chris Stapleton. 

Going against the grain and de-influencing ourselves should be more popular than it is.
